Listen Up Y’all Luke 5:1-11

Opening Salvo
Do you have Last Supper painting in your dining room at home?
Can you name the disciples around Jesus?
In your opinion, how did Jesus invite these people to follow him?

What Was That All About

In Luke 5:1-11, we read about Simon and some of his fishermen friends at the water’s edge. Jesus started talking to them about the kingdom of God. After teaching them, he told the fishermen to go out to the water again and cast their net on the other side of their boats.

Simon objected saying, “Master, we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”

There was Jesus telling professional fishermen to try and catch fish again after a whole night of failing to catch one.

But Simon trusted Jesus. He said “If you say so, I’ll let the nets down again!” Perhaps that was the first time that Peter heard Jesus teach them about the kingdom of God. Perhaps they were amazed at the way Jesus taught them. So he trusted him.

And boy, was he surprised! The nets were full of fish he needed help from other fishermen!

Right there and then, Simon realized that Jesus was not an ordinary guy. He was somebody special! Even James and John, two of his buddies realized this.

Then Jesus delivered the punchline: “Don’t be afraid, from now on you’ll be fishing for people.”

Before Jesus called his first disciples, he first showed them the power that he has.
Before the disciples could fish for people, they had to trust Jesus.
Trust is the foundation of Jesus’ relationship with the disciples.
Because they trusted Jesus and what he can do, Simon, James and John followed Jesus to the adventure of their lifetime.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
If you were Simon, would you be willing to go out to the waters again to catch some fish?
What are the areas of your life in which Christ is asking you to trust?
How can you say yes to the call of Jesus in your life today?

Roll Out
Let’s watch a video of “Dive” by Steven Curtis Chapman
Go around the participants and discuss about ways to “Dive” into God’s call today.

End in prayer.

Filipino Translation

Makinig! Lucas 5:1-11

Unang Bugso

But Simon trusted Jesus.

Right there and then, na-realize ni Simon na special si Jesus. Hindi siya basta bastang tao. Pati si James at si John.

Then Jesus delivered the punchline: “Don’t be afraid, from now on you’ll be fishing for people.”

He has the power over this world.
Walang trust, walang obedience!
Dahil nagtiwala si Simon, James at John, sumunod sila kay Jesus at nagkaroon sila ng adventure of a lifetime.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Roll Out

Lyrics of Dive by Steven Curtis Chapman
The long awaited rains
Have fallen hard upon the thirsty ground
And carved their way to where
The wild and rushing river can be found
And like the rains
I have been carried here to where the river flows, yeah
My heart is racing and my knees are weak
As I walk to the edge
I know there is no turning back
Once my feet have left the ledge
And in the rush I hear a voice
That’s telling me it’s time
to take the leap of faith
So here I go
I’m diving in, I’m going deep in over
my head, I want to be
Caught in the rush, lost in the flow,
in over my head, I want to go
The river’s deep, the river’s wide,
the river’s water is alive
So sink or swim, I’m diving in
There is a supernatural power
In this mighty river’s flow
It can bring the dead to life
And it can fill an empty soul
And give a heart the only thing
Worth living and worth dying for, yeah
But we will never know the awesome power
Of the grace of God
Until we let ourselves get swept away
Into this holy flood
So if you’ll take my hand
We’ll close our eyes and count to three
And take the leap of faith
Come on let’s go
