Holy Week Reflection for 31 March 2010

Read Luke 21.29-38; Hebrews 2.5-18

Tall, black, and gorgeous. Emily Riley had beautiful shining eyes arched by her long, finely curved brows. Braces on her teeth didn’t dent the impressive pretty full lips of her mouth. There was so much joy and life in her. And she had captivated the unspeakably lonesome Ben Thomas.

This particular night she prepared her best for dinner. She and Ben enjoyed the meal and the rest of the evening. She tilted her face on one side like there …

Holy Week Reflection for 30 March 2010
Read Luke 20.1-19; Isaiah 40.1-17

We are going through Holy Week in a series of stories found in the Book of Luke. The characterizations of people in the stories are not strange to us. We have met people like them in our own time, in our own situations. To certain extents these people mirror our own stories. Lent is a season that is timely for examining our own lives.
Religious leaders at Jerusalem ironically challenged the authority of Jesus, while they know some general …

Holy Week Reflection for 29 March 2010

Read Luke 19.45-48; Isaiah 58.3-9

The famous verse of our reading in Isaiah (58.6) in the New Revised Standard Version is rendered as “loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke.” The older rendering in the Revised Standard Version uses the words “bonds of wickedness.” Indeed righteousness is always parallel to justice. Where there is wickedness, there is injustice.

Many of us close our eyes to social evils and injustice, unless we or somebody we know are the victims of …

Holy Week Reflection for 28 March 2010
Read Luke 19:28-44; Amos 5:8-24

Jesus is not riding a horse like a victorious conqueror, which the Romans in the person of Pontius Pilate with troops in formation would have been likely seen. Jesus rides the colt of an ass, more of a workman’s ride. He enters the back gate along a narrower path. Not likely the better paved entrance on the main gate! The irony of the scene must not escape us. Amos a prophet in 8th Century BCE, similarly finds …

Holy Week Reflection for 27 March 2010

Read Luke 24:28-36; Hebrews 10:26-39

Two disciples of Jesus, not among the Twelve, were on their way to Emmaus with the sad news of Jesus’ death. Their sense of loss had brought their faith into a maze of despair. They have witnessed the ministry of Jesus and have accompanied him and his close twelve apostles. Yet now they fail to recognize him as they travel on the road.
They are so like many of us today. We have been Christians for so long, but …

Holy Week Reflections – from Lent to Easter: An Overview
by Earl Canlas
Part 3 of 3: Prophetic and Sacramental Views
This self-giving becomes the basis of the new covenant mediated not by sacrificed animals but of the love of God in the life of Christ. But it is not the offering as a sacrifice per se that is the focus. That is a metaphoric sense of the readings. This Jesus is willing to die for what God intends to be the just use of power, position, privilege, and riches. The principalities of …

Holy Week Reflections – from Lent to Easter: An Overview
by Earl Canlas
Part 2 of 3: Seeing Our Part in a Greater Whole
Holy Week traverses Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, an eight-day celebration of God’s redeeming grace in the person and life-giving ministry of Jesus. It evidences the height, depth, and breadth of the season that Christians call Lent within the immeasurable love of God. Instead of the “I,” “me,” and “mine,” the reflection theme invokes a view of the “we,” “our,” and “us.” Together as a community we find the …

· The Gathering
See the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. (Isaiah 40.10-11)

Holy Week Reflections – from Lent to Easter: An Overview
by Earl Canlas
Part 1 of 3: Patterned in Prayer
The whole series is a prayer beginning with “O, Spirit of God, Give Us Faith….” leading up to “O, Spirit of God, Give Us Life….” The titles of the novena reflections (nine biblical meditations) are each the congregational response in the day’s litany of affirmation. Faith is possible only because God reveals himself and his grace in every human situation. We must recognize how primordial to our faith that God’s design is in …
